Elephant Walk 2007

Last night was the annual march of the elephants in midtown. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is in town for a two week run of shows at Madison Square Garden. They unload their elephants at the railyards in Long Island City and then walk them through the Midtown Tunnel, across 34th Street to the Garden.elephantmarch.jpg

The pleasant weather allowed a nice sized crowd to enjoy the spectacle from the sidewalks lining 34th. As the elephants marched past, swarms of people ran alongside them on the sidewalks trying to catch up to get another look. There were about 10 elephants followed by a bunch of pretty horses. Despite the long waiting/event ratio, it was definitely a real fun and exciting thing to see and well worth it. Here’s some video I shot:

If you missed the elephants last night, you still have one more shot to see them march this year. After the run of shows at MSG, they will leave the city the same way they came in- through the tunnel.
I’ve got a few additional pictures and videos over at Velvet Sea for your viewing pleasure.
