Brrrr…
Now that it’s officially nippy out there, I’m struggling with whether or not to take my air conditioners out. On the one hand, on the really cold nights the wind kind of whips around my apartment. On the other hand, it’s so freaking hot in my steam-heat special that I usually awake parched as a camel in the Kalahari. A little breeze usually evens things out a bit.
I hesitate to remove said a/c units, because (a) I have basically nowhere to put them without the place looking more ghetto than it already does, and (b) last year I my foot had an unfortunate incident involving my bedroom a/c and bottle of wine.
Anyone take theirs out yet? Anyone intending to hold out until they see their breath inside their apartment? Anyone want to come over and pull mine out in exchange for a beer?
I live in a small studio apartment and just leave my air conditioner installed. The little air that escapes into my apartment as a result doesn’t usually bother me, because I like it a bit cold. I actually had my super shut off my radiators because the exhaust pipe in my bathroom hits up my place well enough. And, in the same bathroom, I keep a window cracked with a screen, because my cat like to dream about life on the outside. So, uh, I guess my case is pretty a-typical. But, looking around at most buildings, I notice that people generally just leave their air conditioners installed.
When I lived in Manhattan I kept mine in all year, but like Art my apt was really hot. Now my house in Brooklyn is super cold and I am paying the heating bills, so not only did the AC come out but we put that super stylish clear plastic on the windows to keep the draft out. Just today my cat tried to jump on the sill and smacked his whole head into that plastic–he was pretty shocked and fell straight down, thus proving that cats don’t always land on their feet. Damn that was funny.
For a beer? Count me in.
Actually, I’m surprised you’re in an apt that’s cold. Everyone I know, including myself, has to sweat out the winter. I often have to keep my windor open at night to counter the heat-wave eminating from the pipes.
My apartment is a sauna so I usually keep them up all year but we recently acquired storage so we’ve been contemplating taking the suckers down.
We could use a clear view of the brick wall in front of us.
