A venerable old drinking establishment – the Subway Inn, has been around since at least World War II , perhaps longer. The drinks go for about $ 4 – a far cry from $18 + in establishments a few blocks further uptown. The clientele is an interesting mix. The bar seems to be open i every legal hour of the day and is conveniently located at the 60th and Lexington Number 6 Uptown entrance.

I snapped this shot near Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, about 70 miles south of NYC on Friday morning. Numerous Northeasters create great surf in the winter, but full wetsuits are required for water temperatures in the 30s and 40s.

Every year Fifth Avenue is turned into a giant cattle pen full of large people in big padded clothing ,eating, moving slowly ,walking five abreast on the sidewalks and gawking in amazement at the buildings and chain store displays. NYC thanks them for their money , but most natives know to stay far away until January.

Today, as I was talking an excursion to New England to escape the heat, a construction detour on Route 22 in Wingdale (about 50 miles north of Manhattan ) took us past the frightening Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center, closed in 1988. While this facility didn’t do much to help the mentally ill – emptying the inhabitants into the streets of Manhattan , where they still reside today, was not much of an improvement either.
