Hey, I just uploaded my first ever YouTube video!

It’s of one of the Lucha Libre matches that happened earlier today in Clinton Hill. I had no idea what to expect, but it’s pretty entertaining to watch people in costumes play-fight in a ring in the middle of a Brooklyn street. (It was more exciting than it looks in the video — I must’ve hit record during a slow point.)

I also took a TON of photos, but most of them came out looking like crap. The ones I liked are here.

I like to think the subway map in my head is pretty reliable, but the next time I’m traveling an unfamiliar route, I’m going to check out one of the awesomely convenient sites mentioned in this New York Times article.

HopStop (which a mysterious “guest blogger” wrote about last February),
Trips123, and Public Routes all tell you how to get from one New York City address to another using public transit.

As a little test, I just asked all three sites for a route from my apartment to an office building in midtown where I have a meeting tomorrow. They all gave me decent directions, but HopStop seemed the easiest to use. (HopStop and Trips123 understood when I typed in an intersection, but Public Routes required the full street address of my destination.)

I recommend going with low expectations, though. The island has lots of grass and trees (and not many people) but the buildings, including the old fort and prison, aren’t as exciting as they sound. But then again, I didn’t take a tour, so it’s possible they’d be more interesting with a guide explaining things. A few photos are here.

The Governors Island website has information about free public access to the island on Fridays and Saturdays through September 2.

The website also lists the upcoming events. I’ve pasted a few potential highlights after the jump (including a day featuring slip-n-slide races, which sounds way more fun than wandering around some old fort).

Saturday, June 24
Army Heritage Day: Featuring the 319th Army Band from Fort Totten

Saturday, July 15
The Singer & Songwriter Music Festival: An all-day event showcasing local performers under the tree balcony of Colonels’ Row – from pop and rock to bluegrass and country.

Saturday, August 5
The Love Everybody Movement invades Governors Island! The LEM, known for its ingenious, one-time-only performances, which combine physical challenges, theatrical stunts and hilarious performances, will host an afternoon of backyard summer games and team competitions–right in Manhattan’s own backyard. Expect anything from yard darts to mascot duels, from disco dance-offs to slip-n-slide races. Whatever the game, there’s sure to be lots of high jinks, “cut throat” competition and, of course, outrageous costumes. Participation encouraged! Attendance mandatory! Must be seen to be believed!

I especially appreciated the dancey audience, because at the Eels show the other night, I saw a security lady ask people to stop dancing. (The sad part was, they did. I was secretly hoping for a Footloose-style rebellion.)

Usually when I post about rock shows, it means you’ve already missed your chance. But not this time! The band is also playing a free outdoor show on Saturday afternoon at the East River Amphitheater as part of the East River Music Project. Normally, I’m all about free outdoor rock shows, but I already have plans on Saturday, so I won’t be there.

Also playing: Meneguar, Human Television, and Mobius Band. Check the website for more info.

It was a beautiful night for an outdoor rock show, and a nice reminder that sometimes free shows are just as much fun as the ones that involve huge Ticketmaster fees. Yay!

UPDATE: While poking around on Flickr, I noticed that eatsdirt posted some photos from the show that are much better than mine.
