What does a trans-fat taste like?
New Yorkers can now rejoice! Already having won the distinction of being one of the healthiest American cities, New Yorkers have moved up the ladder of fitness and another notch from the end of the belt. That’s right! The evil trans fats that was most likely present in any meal you had in an NYC restaurant today is now illegal! All restaurants have 6 months left to comply with the passage of the law.
The NYC Board of Health voted unanimously to ban the use of trans fats in food across all NYC restaurants today. So what does this mean for you? I don’t know about you, but how do I know that smaller restaurants are actually upholding the law. I thought lard was banned or at least no longer in common use in food anywhere but when I went around a few city Mexican restaurants, they all informed me that they still used the pig fat to cook their burritos.
But if anyone has tasted pig fat they know that something is amiss, will New Yorkers actually be able to distinguish trans fats from the harmless fats? Fat chance! But seriously, I don’t know how well this law will be enforced. It does make for a neat headline though on a slow news day where no unsexy upskirt shots of celebs are surfacing.

I fall on the side of this being a sort of unnecessary law. Most places aren’t using trans fatty oils or trans fats in their ingredients anymore.
Hell, even Oreos announce proudly they’re now without trans fats!
Better effort could have been put into crafting a law that places a BMI scale outside each Mcdonald’s and children and parents grossly over their BMI can’t go in.
Hahahaha, BMI law is awesome. You should run for city council!!
i’m with you on the ridiculous law thing. how does legislation like this even make it to the floor, let alone get passed??? however, lard and “pig fat” are not trans fats. in fact, the only places *really* affected by this law are fast food joints. trans fats are not generally used by real restaurants that actually cook their own food…
