UES - New Apartment, Unpleasant Surprises
I moved in about 2 months ago and at first, I was happy about my decision.
The apartment was almost twice the size of the apartment I had on 59th (for the same amount of money), it was newly renovated, bigger closets… all good things, but now I’m thinking it may have been one of those “too good to be true” things.
Let me just sum it up.
After one month of being here, I came home one afternoon to find:
1. My super going through the garbage.
At first I thought he was just making sure things were sorted properly and then I noticed 2 things from MY regular garbage sitting on the stoop - for him to bring to his place.
2. Leaves in the apartment.
Seems I have a working fireplace and all the leaves, sand and dirt were all over my living room.
3. Dripping Water.
While in the bathroom. I felt water on my back.
The apartment above me had a leak in their bathroom and it was coming into mine.
FUN!
Since then, the ceiling has been fixed, I’m careful about what I throw out and I’ve stuffed the fireplace until they come up with a better fix.
What else? As if that weren’t enough.
I lost power in my apartment on Friday. Well, just in the bathroom and bedroom.
Sadly, the fuse box was painted shut and when I pried it open, I couldn’t get the damn switches to work.
I went to see the super, but unfortunately, he doesn’t speak much English, so when I told him about my power, he thought I had a problem with flies. Yes, flies. He came over and couldn’t figure out how to fix my problem and told me I had to wait until Monday. Great. A weekend of candlelit showers.
To make matters worse, I came out of the shower on Saturday afternoon to the sound of keys opening my front door. It was the super. He had called the handyman to come and fix the problem, and when I didn

I’m not super familiar with NYC law, but in my last couple of NYC apartments my super always called or made an appointment if they needed to come in. I don’t know if that’s common courtesy, or the law. In any case, what’s going on in your building sounds fishy and I’d definitely change the locks.
Dios mio, la vida melinda!
Sean - I had no idea you spoke Spanish.
Sadly, I’m not 100% sure what you’re trying to say… except for the ‘oh my god’ part.
Hey, my super goes through the trash, too! Actually, for a second while reading this I wondered if we don’t live in the same building! Creepy super - check. Dripping water in the bathroom - check. Unreliable utilities - yup, got that too. No fireplace, though.
The worst was when my roommate tossed out an old, stained t-shirt, and a week later saw the super’s wife wearing it in the hallway. Ick.
That is pretty bad Nora, glad I haven’t seen my stuff since that day.
I actually spoke with the management company today and they apologized like crazy (means nothing to me). The funny thing is that they told me not to contact the super. Well, what’s the point in having a super. I thought that’s what they’re there for?
Guess that’s not the case in my building.
Who cares if he goes through your trash. He’s probably looking for all of the stuff that you (and we all) throw away that is still useful, but we are too lazy to fix. Get over your over privileged
self.
i usually offer things to my super before i throw them out–things that are still in good condition and usable, that is. why not? why throw it away? and i get shit fixed in my apt. in a hurry. it’s a give and take. last week i gave him a toaster oven.
I am all about recycling and keeping waste down.
I just find it disturbing that someone goes through my trash. I guess there are certain things that I would like kept to myself. Especially for a woman that lives alone.
As for the “over-privileged” comment. I guess it’s easy to judge when you don’t know someone. I am FAR from “over-privileged”, but if telling me that makes you feel better… you go right ahead.
Put a safety chain on your front door, so when you are home…in the shower or sleeping…NO ONE can ever walk in on you.
Keep in fastened whenever you are home.
Safety first ! ! ! !
