Thanks for the explanation. I don't see any representation from NYC muslims on this blog (which is really very sad) so an Eid post was not a possibility. Still many muslims readers do read this blog so I wanted to wish them all.

It was deleted because it was perceived as a spam message.

Since the message had nothing to do with the post, it was deleted and perceived as someone trying to get an incoming link to their own Website. If there was an Eid post then by all means the message would have been welcome.

Why have you deleted my comment about Eid? Are muslims not a part of big apple? :(

Bravo and Amen to that!

I thought I was alone. Years ago the neighborhood would actually participate and the fairs were like huge garage sales with interesting and unique items.

Everything in New York City seems to have become canned fun- and Bloomberg isn't helping - blech.

I also want to echo the sentiment of "creatrixx" in going beyond just banning Street fairs. Get rid of all this crap. NYC is not a playground and for those that want playgrounds - GO TO one.

Yes let's re-think these street festivals. The same vendors repeat every 2 blocks or so and every festival has the exact same vendors. There really is nothing festive about these street fairs.
If each street fair were a type of festival celebrating something specific it may be interesting. They sell pretty crappy stuff that can sometimes be bought around town for the same price or less.

Okay - so one person would miss the aprepas (sweet corn cakes with cheese). They must exist somewhere in this city or it's boroughs.

Let's get a petition going to ban this waste!

i was so happy to read this post and know that i am not insane!

absolutely the street festivals suck. and a few other things suck as well:

tickertape parades for sports teams
marathons!
the thanksgiving day parade -- in fact, all the damn parades!
fireworks along the east river
the U.N.

this city is just too big and busy and complex for these kinds of events. it costs the taxpayers millions in cleanup and security, people always get hurt (or robbed, or raped) and there is ongoing partisan squabbling over who does or doesn't get to have a parade, or who did or didn't march in it. i mean, don't we have enough real problems to deal with? we really don't need these distractions and resource drains.

what can i tell you? call me ebenezer!

There's one thing I find at the street fairs that I have a difficult time finding elsewhere: the aprepas, the sweet corn cakes with cheese.

The reason, Yakov, is that they're all McDonaldized. They all have the same things. If there were 5 really unique street fairs with themes during the year, like the Diwali festival at South Street Seaport then it would be worthwhile.
