Governor Spitzer hearts NY, hookers
So, as most people probably already know, the Big News in NYC today is all about NY governor Eliot Spitzer being involved in a prostitution ring. Though some of the details in the media reports sound circumstantial, there were apparently wiretaps involved, and the governor has admitted to boning prostitutes (well, in slightly different words). Interesting, for a man who, as attorney general, focused all of his energy on getting rid of corruption. Not to mention that he ran for governor while riding on that anti-corruption momentum.
While I think that people’s personal lives are just that, personal, I also think that public officials, especially those who purport themselves to be on a higher moral ground, should, you know, refrain from doing illegal things. I’m sure people would be shitting bricks if he’d had an affair - for example, with an intern - but this is entirely different since he broke the law of the state that he is governing.
He hasn’t resigned yet, but I’m willing to bet it’ll happen soon.

I agree with you. Personally, it doesn’t bother me all that much when politicians have affairs. Being a politician involves a certain kind of ego, and it’s not infrequent that that kind of personality engages in affairs. And that doesn’t mean they can’t be good politicians, presidents, etc. FDR, Thomas Jefferson, and of course, Clinton, fall into this category.
But this is different! Prostitution is illegal. If Spitzer wanted to get it on with someone other than his wife, why didn’t he just pick up someone up? You don’t need to spend $80,000 to get a girl to sleep with you! If he had some random extra-marital affair, I’d be shrugging it off. But to spend so much money on something illegal - frankly I don’t care how good an attorney general he was, he should resign.
