On my last NY trip I did a tour with James Kalm of one of the last artist strongholds in the city between Williamsburg and Bushwick; an area protected from gentrification by the poor service on the L. Doing the scene here takes some serious commitment and inside knowledge of gallery hours. Sad to say even this brownfield zone has real estate prices well out of average artist range but plenty of spots to squat,paint, freeze and eat cat food.
