Subway Sushi

Last night, while riding the subway home to Astoria, I saw a bizarre site. A young, stylish woman pulled out a tray of Sushi to go and began eating on the subway. It was hilarious! Such a uniquely New York scene. Where else would you see this upscale exotic cuisine eaten on mass transit?

I think sushi has become less of an upscale item and certainly not so exotic since you can purchase it at most every grocery and deli across the city. And it’s true I think of many larger cities. Grocery stores in my hometown of Washington carry it now. I do think you’re right that it’s a very NY (or at least big city) thing to see it on mass transit, though.

When you can buy sushi at every single corner deli in the city, it’s no longer an “upscale exotic” cuisine. It’s as ubiquitous as a bag of potato chips in this city.

Yeah, case and point. Something considered exotic and upscale in most non-urban places in the country is eaten in NYC on the subway and found in stores throughout the city. This may be the case in other large cities as well, but it’s certainly not in most places in the US.

I remember back in the 80’s rolling joints on the subway.

I guess today that would be considered “exotic”

gross. how anyone can even think of eating in a filthy subway car is beyond my comprehension.

Sushi’s hardly upscale anymore, at least in the US…

Sushi on outgoing Metro-North trains all the time… people buy it from the sushi place at the dining concourse in Grand Central. I’ve had it before on train rides out of Manhattan… hit or miss, I’d say.

Yeah, not so bizarre. People have been eating sushi for thousands of years. It’s not a novelty.

Jaded people might not be impressed, but I still think it’s cool to see. I’m sure we all know people who have never had sushi, so it’s not that ubiquitous. And it’s not the usual hotdog you would have expected in the past, which shows how quickly NYC (and US, and World) culture has changed in just the past few decades.
