Bye Bye Bubbles — RIP Beverly Sills

No sooner did I write about missing Joel Siegel http://nyc.metblogs.com/archives/2006/06/joel_siegel_rip.phtmlthan
I find myself saying goodbye to yet another NYC icon. Beverly Sills aka Bubbles, who died Monday of inoperable lung cancer. Sills, by the way, was not a smoker.

She was born Belle Silverman in Brooklyn, 78 years ago. Maybe that is what endeared her to me: that she was a Brooklyn girl — Bubbles, Barbra Streisand, and me. She was also an dedicated fundraiser for Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Opera.

Just a few months ago, the co-hostesses of “The View”. the ABC daytime talk show, did a series of broadcasts on which each co-host brought her best friend as her guest. Barbara Walters, co-host and resident matriarch of “The View” , presented her best friend/co-host, who was Beverly Sills. The first thing I said when I heard of Bubbles’ death was “Barbara Walters must be devastated”

I am not an opera fan, but I am a NYC lover. And Beverly Sills WAS NYC. Bye-bye Bubbles. We’ll miss you.
