NY’s Dirty Laundry

http://nyc.metblogs.com/archives/images/2007/05/nysdirtylaundry-thumb.jpgPatrice Johnson’s film “NY’s Dirty Laundry” was just picked up by the Cannes Film Festival. Why is this important or relevant? For several reasons. First of which is that the film focuses in on a predominantly black neighborhood in Brooklyn in the post 9/11 era.

The landscape remains the same but people’s sentiments change. As in, black folks are now a step above in comparison with their Muslim neighbors.

Stereotyping & race-profiling against Muslims around the world after 9/11 was extremely horrifying. But it was especially visible in NYC. The film deals with neighbors of varied backgrounds and the way each sees himself and also sees the other . . .

Why else is this important? Patrice Johnson is an amazing filmmaker from Brooklyn who after achieving her degree in aeronautical engineering from Cornell decided that it just wasn’t meant for her.

Why else is this movie going to the Cannes Film Festival a big deal? I acted in it! Woot! This is probably the least of the important aspects, but still, makes it worth your while.
