live from central park
Public park space is amazing. The value of a park in the middle of a vast urban landscape is exceptionally undervalued and often overlooked.
Public parks appeal to the caveman in all of us- humans are instinctivey drawn to landscapes, nature, and open fields. The serious lack of nature in this city could wear on a person very quickly. I know it does on me,
Central park, above all else, is a near perfect escape from city life. When sitting in Sheep’s Meadow, as I am right now, one cannot hear the honking of horns, the clamor of construction, or the boom of the city. One can stroll, rather than rush. One can get lost on its trails, instead of being bound by the rigid grid system. One can lay on the grass and for a second imagine being somewhere else. It’s a respite from the fast pace.
I only wish there were spots in the park where I couldn’t see a skyscraper in the distance, or a fence keeping me out of a lawn. Otherwise, I’m in heaven.

If you do not like skyscrapers why do you live in new York City? I think skyscrapers are awsome works of Engineering and Craftsmanship and many of them are grand and beautifull. Skyscrapers make it possible for alot of human beings to live work and play in an otherwise verry small area,
without skyscrapers New York City would not be New York City!

The pompous arrogance of some people to suppose that they “speak for everyone” never ceases to amaze me.
what strange comments! just because i don’t want to see skyscrapers occasionally during my park experience does’t mean i dislike them. and just because i want some nature doesn’t mean i dislike the city. also, any time anyone writes a generalization, it’s assumed that it doesn’t pertain to everyone and that perhaps things should be read as a whole and not dissected.
I agree that those comments were indeed strange. Enjoying nature, doesn’t mean you don’t enjoy the city. One of the best things about this city is the wonderful huge park in the middle of it. Where else could you have such huge park that provides so much community? Humans do crave nature, just as they crave social interaction, which is why Central Park is the best of both worlds!
Why does everyone pick on Irina? I too love skyscrapers! But getting to the park, or even better, out of the city, is often a great release and something I greatly look forward to. Should all who love buildings but also enjoy the park move out of the city? That makes no sense, Mr. Smith!
And Kip, how is it pompous to say that people enjoy nature? It seems that you are taking this post WAY too personally!
