One less breed of stinky animal on the Upper West Side.

I can’t believe the Claremont Riding Academy has closed! This place is (was?) right around the corner from me, and though I have to admit I’ve been less than charmed on occasion by the smell of horse shit emanating from it, I’ve always regarded an old-school riding academy in the middle of Manhattan as kind of special. Turns out it is (was) the oldest continuously operated stable in the United States! Too bad I only heard that upon its closing…
Still, in the end it’s probably for the best, especially for the poor city-bound horses who will at least find themselves in more comfortable surroundings. Now how can we get rid of those tragically sad horse-and-carriage nightmares that begin trudging their way around the lower loop of Central Park, day in and day out, right around this time of year?
Anyone ever ride at Claremont? And how about those Central Park carriages I just bashed? How was it?

I am sitting in London crying (yes actually crying at the age of nearly 40) at the thought that I won’t see Hershey, the horse I rode while living in NYC, again. This is such upsetting news. Quite apart from my friends who have lost jobs as instructors, it’s another NYC institution that no authorities seem to deem fit to preserve. Really tragic. Sorry to all of you who have lost those wonderful horses, but the consolation is that the horses are bound to be happier where they’re going. I’d take a field over a city street any day.
