Tribeca film festival starts tomorrow

Tribeca Film festival is as much an independent film festival as McDonald’s is fine dining. Look no further than the U.S. premiere of Spider-Man 3 being at the DeNiro supported festival as evidence.

It starts here in NYC tomorrow and people always ask me if I’m going and expect a resounding yes. I have yet to attend the festival and maybe I will get a chance to in the near future. But I just don’t find it to be the most inspirational festival to attend. It’s definitely better than the thieving New York Film Festival which rapes independent filmmakers for their non-existent dollars.

And Tribeca does give a chance for filmmakers to receive viewers that also happen to be other filmmakers through triggerstreet.com. Pretty much what the festival does is brings a lot of media to lower Manhattan and it gives movies like Spider-Man 3 and last year’s World Trade Center a chance to get “indie-street” cred. But aspiring filmmakers know that there is nothing independent about Tribeca and the only way they’ll rise to receiving any press/attention is if they are a studio-backed film or one of the hundreds of thousands of filmmakers competing for a chance to have a screening through triggerstreet.

I’m not bashing corporate sponsorship from car makers, retail giants, beer companies, major media companies, and credit card companies. That’s an amazing accomplishment. But those of you who think it’s a great way to get independent film exposure, think again…and enjoy the show!
