City UNDER the Sea???

NYunderwater.jpgThe debate about Global Warming rages on… It will surely be a hot-button issue in the 2008 elections, and scientists argue incessantly about where facts end and opinions begin. Now, the betting industry has entered the fray.

Oddsmakers from at least one major online gambling service are now taking bets on the effects of global warming. It is an interesting and alarming thing to place a bet on, but I guess it was only a matter of time.

The alarming thing for us NYers is that the most prevalent bet on the system is that Manhattan will be submerged in the ocean by New Years on 2011… Not too far off!

Sound off, NY. What do you think?

Nice picture. I don’t like the idea of being under water. I hope they are wrong.

don’t get me wrong–i’m as concerned as the next guy (actually, probably more so), and have always made it a matter of personal policy to live a life with as little environmental impact as possible… but this whole thing is really taking on an Y2K tone, isn’t it? if this is *anything* like that, i imagine that manhattan will probably *not* be underwater in 2011…

that’s not to say everyone shouldn’t so what they can. because they should. there is no reason to live as wastefully as we do, and there are so many changes that are within our power to make.

Right on, Chris. I too try to live a life with minimal environmental impact, with a few exceptions… I am not a “conservationist,” just a realist, and I am not ignorant to the fact that every thing I do will effect my kids, grandkids, great grandkids, and the rest of human kind.

But, Manhattan under water in 4 years??? That seems very apocalyptic and unrealistic, from a lay person’s point of view. But, I bet they are offering pretty great odds! So it may be worth a small wager, if you are a betting man, or woman.
