Chai, Toys & Music
If you are thirsty for a nice chai latte, there are several options you have. You can buy some off the shelves at your organic grocery stores. You can visit your Indian friend and have their mother make you some. You could even attempt to create it on your own. But I recently found a place that satisfies my Indian taste for chai & also indulges my latte taste buds.
There’s something about the Chai Latte that just makes your taste buds rise with intrigue.
On the Lower East Side is probably the best place to find good chai. I prefer my chai with a side of legos and music. I’ve been to Teany, there’s now a little tea shop between Bleecker & MacDougal too.
I’ve noticed that regular coffee places like Joe The Art of Coffee have upped their tea offerings as well. And along with chai, games, and newspapers, most places are now offering up music that matches the highly refined taste of the Juicy Show podcast.
It’s just an entire experience. For those who don’t like to frequent bars or clubs or lounges, there is that special chai latte awaiting with great music, fun toys, and extremely engaging and affable people. I find it the best way to meet new people as well.
Try it out tonight; yes tea sipping is now also a night time activity.

For what it’s worth, the Chai latte at Yaffa Cafe (open 24 hours, on St. Marks btw 1st and A) is probably the most delicious beverage I’ve ever had. Not to mention, it’s a pretty cool place for late night, inexpensive food.
Perhaps you have never been to Jackson Heights an area which has a large Indian population. There are Chai drinks that can make your head spin and Lassis (my personal favorite ) in mild fruit flavors as well as cardamon and salty all depending on your taste
Kulfis - indian style ice cream and another one of my favorites is the very strong tasting teas with foamed milk
well worth the trip
Additionally the store Patel Brothers has take out which is unbelievable
Recently I read an article in the New York Times about a person who actually left his apartment in Manhattan and moved to Jackson Heights to be within walking distance of his favorite foods. that is what I call devotion to ones taste buds.
Oh no Marsh. I love Jackson Heights. Though I’ll admit I’ve never had chai there because I make a mean chai myself. I was talking more about the elusive & Westernized Chai Latte. It is something to relish in a completely different light.
