Friday Night Karaoke

If you’re in the mood for Karaoke tonight, plenty of options exist in the city. But if you want somewhere a bit less known and less popular, try Albatross in Astoria.
Albatross is a gay bar located not far from Astoria Blvd. It hosts various events throughout the week, including karaoke, performers, burlesque shows. It’s an interesting place since sometimes it’s completely packed and other times it’s empty. There’s a pool table and other games available. Definitely a unique spot for Friday night Karaoke.
The first time I went to Albatross, I really didn’t know what I was in for. It was a Saturday, when they usually have some kind of performance, and I came with bunch of friends who had been there before. Once inside, I took a look at the women talking intimately with each other, men exchanging touches, and it quickly became clear that this was not a straight bar.

Then the first performer came on the stage. Now for some reason, even though I was well aware of my surroundings, I thought the performer was a women. It took me a little while of watching her muscular arms while she danced that a vision of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert came to me and I realized that I was watching my first drag show.
After that night’s enjoyment, I have happily frequently Albatross since.
