Film and Fashion on the Move

The Museum of the Moving Image just finished their Fashion in Film Festival. Having only heard about it yesterday, I managed to catch one of the last screenings.
Located in Astoria, this museum includes prop, costume, and historical exhibits from the movie industry. In addition to weekend screenings, the museum hosts several events throughout the year, including the Machinima Festival, the Havana Film Festival, and the current Fashion in Film Festival. This current film festival showed films ranging from 60’s parodies about the fashion world to contemporary documentaries about fashion designers.
We went to see Unzipped, a documentary directed by Douglas Keeve about Isaac Mizrahi in the mid 90’s. The documentary started the day after an unsuccessful show of Mizrahi’s last collection. It then followed the story of how his next collection was made. The film was mostly shot in black and white, with occasional color shots of the clothes. Following the collection from its inception to the show, this documentary gave an inside view of the fashion world. Supermodels Naomi Campell, Kate Moss, and Cindy Crawford were all featured in the film. Mizrahi’s wit and humor made this film not only interesting, but quite hilarious.
I’ve enjoyed every film festival I’ve been to at the Museum of the Moving Image. I’d love to hear about other interesting film festivals coming up.
