Seeking the Carrie Bradshaw Life

My friend Sherrie is moving to New York. I met Sherrie when I lived in Los Angeles for four years. She is in PR and wants to do graduate studies at NYU. So far so good. She gets to live here for a while and see if she can handle it permanently. But then she almost threw me off my chair when she emailed me back “I want to live the life of Carrie Bradshaw [Sex and the City] for a while”.

Excuse me? Does this still exist? Did it ever? Can you write a column and pay New York rent and shop Prada, while paying NYU tuition? Sherrie is no trust-fund baby, by the way. Does she need a serious reality check? I am inclined to let her hold onto her dream and risk disillusionment, or make it happen to the extent she can. Or maybe she can inch closer to the life of a “Friends” character. Or the “King of Queens”. What has TV done for/to our image?

does she just want to date and buy clothes? i don’t think it’s that hard if you’re a hardened dating veteran with a credit card.

    Not gonna happen.

I mean, who has time to work, go to school, fiendishly shoe shop and date in this city? Not to mention the fact that people have to find time to sleep.

I am completely in love with NYC, but that “T.V. life” is completely unrealisitic. Unless, like you stated, one has a nice trust fund.

send her a link to craigslist rental listings. that’ll snap her back to reality faster than a magnolia cupcake. (yeah i know that makes no sense but i had to work in magnolia somehow).

Thanks everybody for your comments! I love when my postings spawn such buzz! I believe while she is studying at NYU she can live in their housing but when that is all over, let her try to rent! And the A-list parties she wants to attend! All power to her if she can make that happen. Maybe she will take her with me!

I agree. I always thought the “Carrie Bradshaw” life was way too unreal! She buys her shoes for over a thousand bucks and she writes a column for a newspaper! But still, there is way more fun to life than just shopping in NYC. I am sure she will enjoy the life here, just not maybe the TV life she has in mind.

My friend’s roommate moved here expecting that. Then she was confronted by trash, rats, roaches, the fact that no one has an apartment like Carrie’s on Carrie’s salary (and could still afford the occasional Blahnik or Jimmy Choo set)…I have to say, coming from a person who loves the crash and burn, it’s kind of gratifying seeing reality slap the clueless in the face.

Funny you should mention “Friends” because it’s also inconceivable to have a large, funky apartment like that on a waitress+caterer’s salary. Totally fantasy.

Your friend probably feels like she’s getting old and life will pass her by. (Those SATC chicks were in the mid-to-late 30s, btw!) She should seek the budget social opportunities right now, work hard, GRADUATE, and get into her career as soon as possible. NYC is like any big city where you can make ends meet on minimum wage but to really *live* you need that super-duper job.

I like Aidan. I know that is only peripherally related to the post, but I must say that I hated everyone on that show, except for him.

Funny you never hear about anyone moving to Baltimore seeking the Stringer Bell life. Too bad, “The Wire” is a much better show.

I am the Sherrie you guys are discussing. I am 49 years old and a publicist.

We LA girls love Carrie Bradshaw. Where is Mr. Big? I can afford some type of apt. in the city. I live in a rent controlled bldg. now. It is not “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” for all of us LA gals.

    Come visit and see.
