The Beatification of Rudy
I was considering researching a very intensive article, but I thought, instead (and also because doing extensive research is a. boring and b. hard to do at work) I’d post this entry more as a “hmm” to you readers, for personal reflection or for commenting.
It’s amazing to me that Rudy Giuliani continues to have such a positive image in the media, despite his incredible flip-flopping on social issues (going from mildly liberal to Jerry Falwell in the span of running NYC to running for Presiden), hardlining to the right even further in areas in which he was already monarch-like (police state) and essentially somehow always having the conversation steered to how well he posed for the cameras after 9/11 (with no mention of the Disneyfication of NYC, only that he dropped the crime rate in the Big Apple in the awesomest awesome of ways. Awesome.).
Am I missing something in Giuliani? He felt rather tool-like to me as an outsider and I was out of the country when Bloomberg waltzed into the Mayor’s office on the angel-like wings of Saint Giuliani’s post-disaster blessing, so I’ve only voted in one mayoral race in NYC (and god help us but that choice was less a “lesser of two evils” decision and more a “arsenic or bullet to the head?” decision), but it seems to me that our so-called liberal media in the US is spearheading the image of Giuliani as “Reagan with no faults” (And, oddly, “Reagan with no faults” only came into existence when Ronnie died). Of course, that a Republican is faring well in the media doesn’t stop the right from crying about Bush, but it must be hard to support a criminal and keep finding ever more creative ways to say someone’s not lying, but I digress.
The idol worship of Giuliani by Joe-schmoe is amazing to me and makes me think the man could have stood on his old mayoral campaign principles while running for President, yet he careened to the hard right and the only people who seem to have noticed it are the people on the hard right. And they’re the only ones not buying it.
