Roll out!

ecie-rwb200.jpg Are you like me, pining for the smell of roller-skate grease, the sounds of wheels on sport court, and the sight of girls in mini-skirts and elbow pads duking it out on skates? The Gotham Girls Roller Derby season is a few months away yet but satisfaction is just a short train ride away.

This weekend the Philly Roller Girls are sponsoring the East Coast Derby Extravaganza! It’s over 50 hours of derby in three different rinks over 2 days, and that should be enough for anybody frankly.

Besides New York and Philadelphia teams from all over the east coast will be playing, Ohio, Raleigh, Detroit, Chicago, Rhode Island, Grand Rapids and Norfolk have all fielded teams, to name a few.

If you are familiar with the Gotham Girls you know that there are 4 teams from the New York area, but the team playing in Philly will be the travel team. I suppose you could think of them as the GGRD All Stars, made up of members from all of the New York teams. (Check here to see if your favorite player is on the team.) They are also fielding a new NYC team calling themselves the Wall Street Traitors. If you just want to see the Gotham Girls then they are playing Carolina Roller Girls on Saturday at noon, and Windy City Rollers on Sunday at noon. The Traitors are in exhibition bouts on Saturday at 5, and Sunday at 11 am. Of course for the true derby enthusiast there are many half-length exhibition bouts with such varied themes as blonds vs. brunettes, Yankees vs. Southerners, and ninjas vs. pirates.

Tickets are a mere $25 for all the bouts on both days, or $15 for either single day. There’s even a $1 shuttle from the Septa station to the arena. Check it out for yourself, or check back here for my write-up! Either way, it’s going to be a blast!
