We’re number One Thiry-Nine!!!
Seems New York, a city of pedestrians, isn’t the top walking city in the U.S.
In fact, it’s not even in the top 10. That’s right; it’s number 39.
Prevention Magazine has named Madison, Wisconsin the number one most walkable of our 100 most populated cities. The study was commissioned by the American Podiatric Medical Association and included such factors as crime rate, air quality, access to parks, the number of people who walk to work (note: that right there should put NYC at number one, I would guess, unless they consider riding public transit in any form to be taking door-to-door transportation), weather and number of athletic shoes sold (this seems more a factor of people walking, not whether or not the city is walkable).
The next two top cities were Austin, Texas and San Francisco, California.

total BS!!! have they ever even been to SF? much of the city has those huge hills that are not walkable. it seems like their criteria is based on walking as an exercise and not as a part of your normal day to day activities. the percentage of car owners should be factored in too.
Huh? Can you live in Madison, Wisconsin for 25 years without owning a car? I did it in New York and never felt constrained by lack of wheels, except the time I wanted to go to Ikea in New Jersey.
The magazine is definitely thinking of walking as an afternoon stroll, not as a way of life.
