Working on President’s Day

pres_washington.jpgThe company I work for gives us MLK day off but then we have to work today. Personally, I would prefer President’s Day off simply because it’s sort of in the middle of a longer no-holiday stretch, and it would be nice to have a 3-day weekend in there. MLK is two weeks after New Year’s so it seems to blend in with the holiday season.

There are advantages and disadvantages to working on President’s Day…

Advantages:

  1. Less people and vehicular traffic when walking down the street (see disadvantage #1)
  2. Generally a quiet day work wise, because while we are working, many people in the company did take the day off, and outside vendors have off too. Good day to clean up my desk.

Disadvantages:

  1. Everyone else that you know is snuggled in bed while you are walking to work in the blustery cold
  2. Delis and coffee carts that serve business areas are closed today
  3. The buses and trains run on a Saturday schedule today
  4. The cafeteria at work does not get fresh bagel (or other food) deliveries today

We have today off as well as MLK day but I chose to work today, meaning my paycheck will be nicely padded by overtime pay. Thanks, dead presidents, in more way than one!

Today is my first day at a new job. It is good because the office is half-full, and my boss has time to train me without a rushed feel. But, the bad is that I had to explore a new lunch area while half of the places were closed or only half-open (no salad bar, less options, etc.)

More on the new job lunch experience later…
