“Our good friends in Venezuela!”

Chavez_JPKennedy.jpgYesterday evening, I was at the gym, minding my own business, riding the elliptical machine and focusing in on The Simpsons to try to distract myself from the burning sensation that was originating in my calf muscle. Then, the show went to commercial and I was caught off-guard by a ridiculous ad that I find both irresponsible and unfortunate.

Joe Kennedy, the first-born son of slain New York Senator and presidential hopeful Bobby Kennedy, had purchased a spot to plug his Citizens Energy Corporation, a non-profit that has a stated mission of making energy more accessible and affordable. In the short, propaganda-heavy, preachy ad, he is seen espousing the Venezuelan state-owned petroleum company Citgo. For those of you who don’t know, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has a vitriolic hatred for all things U.S., and has come into our country and criticized our government. The Cuban, Syrian, and Iranian-aligned leader has also told the US to “Go to hell, gringos!” Because Citgo is state-owned, Chavez has ultimate control of the company. So, in essence, Kennedy is aligning with Chavez.

Now, I am all for free speech, but from someone who is a visible part of arguably the most prolific political family in the past 100 years, Kennedy is acting terribly irresponsible by point out that the oil is “from our good friends in Venezuela” when Chavez admittedly hates the United States! And I personally resent anyone who doesn’t live here and/or leads another country coming onto our soil and preaching about how our leadership is bloodthirsty in an effort to promote disunity. Regardless of whether a person likes the sitting leadership or not, Chavez’s tactics should seem out of place, tasteless, and diplomatically ridiculous, even more so from a power-hungry communist who is ruining the social fabric of his own nation.

As for Kennedy, it is more proof that the glory days of Jack and Bobby, two of the finer politicians in our modern history, are long gone, and the Kennedy brood is now composed of screw-ups and boorish overgrown frat boys who are out of touch with the problems of the common man, and too impressed with their last name to be willing to stand up for what is right for the country. This trend can also be seen in Bobby Kennedy Jr, who while preaching about conservation and less excess, flies around on his corporate jet and gets money from his family’s oil investments. The guy is the definition of hypocrisy! Though both Joe and Bobby look very much like their dad, neither seem to have inherited his love of country and desire to make the world a better place.

    Well said.

Sometimes you have to make a deal with the devil for the greater good of the country. My prediction is that Chavez will ruin his country to the point that they will offer the U.S. dirt cheap oil just to keep the government and country afloat.

Some of his ideas are good but unfortunately he burns his bridges and insults the people that he would need support from. Perhaps he needs to work on his standup act a bit.
