NYPD Cops Parking Illegally
Over the past few months since our office moved to 6th Avenue and 20th Street, I have noticed a disturbing trend. In the day time both sides of Sixth Avenue are no parking zones except for loading and unloading. Thus a car parked there stands out. And invariably I have seen cars parked there with an official looking police sign put on the dashboard. This gives them an immunity to park in No-Parking zones.
However at all times, these are private cars. They do not even bear NYPD plates. How are they allowed to just park like that ? Is the law above the people ??
Just today I noticed a Gray Nissan Altima parked outside Cosi. The car had the requisite placard in the dash, making it untouchable. After I picked up my lunch and walk out, I see a couple in plainclothes getting into the car and driving away. The couple was standing in front of me in the cashier line at Cosi. They were not on official duty. The woman was a cop and she and her boyfriend were grabbing a bite on their way to a movie uptown.
I wish I had a camera to snap their picture and post it. This is blatant abuse of powers. Can the public do anything about it ??

Cops have parked illegally for ages now. You will remember last year when at Shea Stadium they were parking on the grass fields outside of designated areas. They were doing so candidly and without retribution.
Who is going to stop a hero from illegal parking or even illegal driving?
I think its just a small perk for putting yourself in harms away and dealing with scumbags everyday. They get paid peanuts so let them have their free 15 minute parking or better yet park right behind them.
Dhaval….I completely agree. The next time I see a car parked illegally I am going to take a picture and put it up on this site.
Neil….cops here in NYC are very well paid. Their starting pay is the same as that of an architect starting out.
An architect needs 5 years of college education. A cop needs a high school degree. Go figure !! So no, they are not poorly paid.
And as much as I see that they do a job that takes them in harm’s way, its a job. We all do our jobs and dont ask for discounts because of it.
Is this actually effecting you or are you just complaining Arzan?
Arzan Im not sure who the hell you’ve been talking to, but a NYC Cop starts out with $25,100 a year. LESS THAN A MECHANIC.
And a cop needs 60 college credits, not a high school diploma. So why don’t you do some research before you show your stupidity?
If they wish to get promoted, say a Sgt or even Lt.. then that requires even MORE education. Specifically 4 yr degree for a Sgt…. and possibly more for Lieutenant. Which.. A Lt. only makes a tad bit over 100,000 a year.
And to substanciate my claim
A mechanic earns 15-20 an hour.
Figure $17/hr for a 40 hr work week. (Which, since mechanics get paid by the job, not by actual clocked hours, could clock well over 40 hrs a week)
Take that 40hrs a week @ 17 dollars and multiply by 48 weeks… perhaps the guy takes a MONTH off, which no mechanic does-
That comes to $32,640 a year for a mechanic making 17 an hour taking a month off.
Pete
Can you send me a link to how you claim that they make $25,100 annually??
I have based my figure on conversations with friends who were former cops.
And the topic of this post is the illegal parking by the city cops. You havent even made an attempt to address that issue.
