Meet the New H&M…Same as the Old H&M?
On my way home from work today I was going through the intersection at 18th and 5th when I spotted something new. At the site of the old Daffy’s was a spanking new, shiny looking huge clothing store I couldn’t remember seeing there before. Upon further inspection, I noticed many people standing out in from and gawking at the window displays. As the sign in front moved into focus it said the store was opening tomorrow (Thursday 12/7) at noon. And then I realized this is the new H&M, the one with the “Coming Soon” sign I have been passing for months, the one that is finally going to bridge that huge, H&M-less chasm between Houston and 34th street. Oh come on, you know the void I speak of–where else can you move through cramped isles looking at wretched, wrinkled clothing with the slim possibility of just maybe finding a cute, cheap staple or something ironic so close the L train? Maybe four or five places, but that’s it.
But the real revelation here is why didn’t I know this was an H&M right away, after passing it’s carcass for months? Maybe it was because everything was so orderly inside, all the employees working feverishly into the night actually seems happy and content with their jobs and it looked like I might actually want to buy clothing there. How long before it becomes a festering mess like the rest of their stores here? I give it until 2:00 pm tomorrow, tops. If anyone stops by tomorrow let us know how mad it is.
