Metblogs NYC Advent Calendar. (Day 4)

Opening door number four reveals… sidewalk Christmas tree stands!
This time of year, one of the questions I get most often from non-New Yorkers is, “How do New Yorkers without cars get Christmas trees???” And without fail, the questioners are always surprised to learn that it’s as simple as walking (at most) a couple of blocks. And how about all that high-tech tree-wrapping technology, so that we New Yorkers can get those trees up the narrow little staircases of our tiny fifth-floor walkups?
Yeah, the stands can be an annoyance at times, especially when they cut down on much-needed sidewalk space right at a time of year when the sidewalks become even MORE crowded. But really, whatever your religious beliefs, everyone can appreciate the phenomenon of being overcome by the fresh scent of pine needles every couple of blocks for a few weeks each year. So much more pleasant than the other scents we’re overcome by on a daily basis!
