Thanksgiving Travels

FINALLY my internet is back up & running properly! It’s amazing what us New Yorkers will sacrifice for an affordable living space. My apartment has had building wide internet issues, no hot water for a few days, and roach & mice problems. Any other town and I would have moved out a month ago! But for this price in this location, with this view, the thought of moving gets pushed to the bottom of my list of things to do.

I feel the need to more or less “vent” about my traveling experiences this past weekend. So if you’re interested, read on.

My flight was originally scheduled 8:30pm from LaGuardia Airport to Detroit. Days before the flight, they pushed it back to 8:45pm. So I left my apartment around 5:45 figuring it usually takes about an hour to ride the train then the bus to the airport. On the subway, I was fidgeting with my phone & my ipod, and I COMPLETELY MISSED MY STOP! No big deal, I got off at the next stop. At this point it was raining so I didn’t want to walk back to the bus stop. I stopped at an ATM and got out 40 bucks. After this, it stopped raining, so I decided to walk anyways. A man told me FOLLOW THE SUBWAY LINE 4 BLOCKS AND YOU’LL FIND THE BUS STOP. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE THE SECOND BUS STOP BECAUSE THE FIRST ONE TAKES YOU BACK INTO MANHATTAN. So I thank him and head on my way. I reach the second bus stop, and stand there for about 10-15 minutes waiting. Get on the bus. Next thing you know I’m heading over the bridge, BACK INTO MANHATTAN! Then I start to curse at myself for being so stupid as to not even double check and look at where the bus was going! It was the last 2 dollars on my metrocard and I had no quarters on me. So I ended up behind this car chop shop looking place in harlem. There were no street lights, and I was wearing a black hoodie and dark blue jeans. About 4 cabs passed me before the fifth finally picked me up. It cost me $26 to get back to the airport- THE SAME PRICE IT WOULD HAVE COST FROM MY APARTMENT! So I get there, and my flight is delayed until 9:45pm. I call my uncle to tell him, and as I’m telling him this guy tells me IT’S DELAYED UNTIL 10:40. So after much complaining, I decided to work on some homework.

Around 10:30, they keep saying “just a few more minutes until boarding.” We didn’t take off until 11:40. I landed in Detroit around 1 or so, finally getting to my mom’s house in Toledo at about 2am. She was confused & surprised, so I guess it was worth it.

LESSON TO BE LEARNED: DON’T TRAVEL ON PEAK TRAVEL DAYS UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO! AND MAKE FREQUENT CALLS TO YOUR AIRLINER BEFORE DEPARTURE TO KNOW HOW ON TIME OR BEHIND THEY ARE RUNNING! I’m sure you all know this already, but I guess the thoughts of thanksgiving dinner really made me a little delusional, perhaps?

Aaaaw, that sucks, Kim! I travel a lot for business and it is remarkable how often similar stories happen… But at least you made it.

I bet the Thanksgiving dinner was well worth the trip!
