NYU Rape, Wake up New York!

A girl was raped on the corner of one of the most popular and what I thought to be safe neighborhoods in the city (Bleecker St. & LaGuardia Pl. in the West Village.) After having a few drinks she was trying to hail a cab when a dark sedan pulled up. She apparently got into the car willingly and then was raped by 3 men. She was dropped off at 46th between 2nd and 3rd avenue after the crime was committed.

It’s a sad story but one that should be taken with caution by students. I agree that these cases are not as common currently, but crap happens and when you get wasted, at least have 1 friend with you.

I usually don’t get shaken up by news stories but this one for some reason was extremely alarming to me. The only thing known about the men who allegedly committed the act was that one of them had a Russian accent. That is it. People need to wake the fuck up too in NYC. If something is happening, don’t just stand there and witness it, do something about it. Even if that something is simply yelling for more help or acknowledging that something is happening.

I recently read an article about a naked man in NYC. He got drunk at night and was naked in the middle of some park during the day. He walked through the entire city where even a police officer just plainly said “Listen buddy, either get out of here or I’ll arrest you.” The officer did not offer help or any other type of suggestions. The man had lost his clothes and was looking for pants. Instead he walked to his friend’s apartment – butt naked – in the East Village and waited until his friend’s neighbor brought him upstairs.

That’s the type of shit that annoys me. So my request to everyone is that yes, we’re all jaded, yes we’ve seen everything, yes we’re not affected by anything, but when someone needs help, we need to do something.

    Sometimes, there are no words.
It’s truly amazing that no friends would have even escorted her TO the car, where they hopefully would have seen it was filled with men waiting to take advantage of a drunk girl.

A very sketchy story. If it was actually a cab that she got into then thats a scary thought. If she willingly got into a strange car then thats asking for trouble. Im a guy and I wouldn’t get into a strangers car.

    I like this idiotic quote:
a 20-year-old blonde who gave only her first name, Lydia. “I think every young girl should downplay her looks. Wear a hoodie or baggy pants.”

Yes Lydia because only slutty looking girls get raped.(sarcasm)

Yes Neil, that quote is pretty typical of aloof, ignorant NYC people.

This story is alarming. I am anxious to hear more about the facts, if they ever come out. Drunk or not, it seems a bit crazy to get into a strange car. We have all been black-out drunk at some point, and I must say that, like Neil, I am a guy and would NEVER get into a strange van, but we clearly don’t know all the facts.
