NY Delis

Does anyone else find it really hard to get a good deli sandwich in Manhattan??? All of the “delis” in NY are those huge full-service grab-and-go restaurants. They have some burrito bar, a sushi corner, a fresh pasta area, that nasty hot bar with what appears to be 2-week-old sesame chicken, and a panini counter… But if you want a turkey sandwich with mustard, you are S.O.L. What’s the deal?

The ones that do have regular sandwich service offer those pre-sliced meats and cheeses, and thats just not OK. If I can’t watch them slice it, I am not into it. Maybe it is a neighborhood thing… I work on 30th and Park. Murray Hill sucks for food, all-around. Almost every restaurant is medocre at best, and there are few quick lunch places. I used to work on 19th and 5th, which was GREAT for food. I could deal with only a few lunch options, but this deli situation is absolutely absurd!

You should pull a Kramer and get your own meat slicing machine.

Over here, the biggest sandwich problem I face is lack of meat. They fill the sandwich with too much lettuce and misc other veggies. Emphasis should be on meat not bread or veggies.

Italian Food Center on Mulberry and Grand. Forget the menu, order what you like. Generous with the best ingredients. Can’t say enough about this place for Italian sandwiches.

the best turkey sandwich in the city is available on tuesdays and fridays at m&o deli on thompson and prince. it’s fresh roasted turked, hand-sliced, and you can get it any way you want. i eat it twice a week, and trust me– it’s worth the trip. check it out!

Due to lack of deli’s in the area I work in (I had a 15 minute break to go get food, eat, and clock back in) I was forced to go to Starbucks for lunch yesterday. I didn’t want any sweets so I chose the Tomato Mozzarella Basil sandwich. It’s tiny, and like $5.25, but most of all it was disgusting. I don’t recommend it. The first bite or two was good, but after that it just became overwhelmingly basil and just EWW. After finishing about half of it, I felt sick to my stomach the rest of the day. Another deli I recently stopped in was Lennys. It was alright, but seemed just like anything I could throw together in my own kitchen. So I think I have to agree with you. I live in gramercy, and lately I’ve found myself eating peanut butter and jelly. =(

Been 5 years since I moved to LA, but there was a GREAT Italian place on the Lower East Side. But if you want Jewish deli, I USED to hit the now-closed 2nd Avenue Deli. Also try Katz’s on Canal, if I’m remembering NYC correctly, and the Carnegie in midtown.

    Good luck!

And that is why we’ve been putting together a wiki business directory for New York! Check out our listings at http://www.wikipages.com. We’re just a small community project but we might be able to help you out. Even down here on Wall Street (day job, but not in the financial industry), we’ve been able to find some decent food options.

@BDT- I’ve been to that food mart in Little Italy… Never for sandwiches, just for cheeses, but will check it out soon.

@ Jake- That sounds good! There is a place near there called Alidoro (also called Molampo) sometimes. Owned by this Italian guy (born in Italy, accent and all). Food is SOOOOO good, but a sandwich is $12+.

@Anna- I will check that out!

@Kim- I admire your guts for eating one of those Starbucks sandwiches. I am not surprised it was “EWW.” But, don’t knock PB&J! I still love a good PB&J every now and then. Did you know Whole Foods has fresh made peanut butter? I was apparently the last to know about this, but I bought some a few weeks ago and it is SOOOOO much better than regular peanut butter. Try it out, Kim! You won’t be sorry. Throw that on some white bread with some Smuckers Strawberry Preserve, and you have yourself a great lunch.

LA Girl- Yes, Katzs on Houston is 3 blocks east of my apt, and I know it well. I like it, and I love Carnegie, but those are not everyday places. But, quite good, none the less. I like Jewish delis, but I HATE Kosher delis. I must have cheese.

@Benjamin- Your site is awesome! I am very familiar with the other Wikimedia group sites, and will be sure to add yours to my rotation.

Keep the comments coming. Where else can you find a great everyday lunch sandwich?
