So I Know I Can’t Dance

Last night I saw the So You Think You Can Dance dancers in concert at the theatre at Madison Square Garden.
Yes, I know. I’m a big fat loser. Read on if you’re a loser too.
Dancing has always been something I wish I could do. While I’m passable in a crowded club, rhythm is a struggle for me. So I’m in awe of people who are good at it.
The SYTHYCD’ers are good indeed. The top 10 replayed a mess of routines from the TV show. Of course some were better than others. I loved the “living dead”/Thriller-esque one as well as the one to BBD’s Poison. But I couldn’t get into the Fosse-inspired bits. Why bother with something that’s only like Chicago? Why not just see Chicago instead? And during the disco-inspired performance, all I kept thinking was that not one of the dancers was even alive in the ’70s.
It was most interesting to see how untrained dancers, like cutie pie Ivan, have improved so much since the show. Ivan started as a popper/breakdancer and now he’s branched out to ballroom and modern dance. But he still does that sticking-out-tongue thing that the judges hated, and Benji was still crazy with the exagerrated facial expressions.
Overall the show was kinda cheesy. Lots of flashing lights, sparkly costumes, and inane banter between performances (Benji was the only articulate one; everyone else should stick to dancing and perhaps mime). Picture a quality cruise show. But I’d be ecstatic to see that trapped on a big boat.
And ecstatic the mostly bridge-and-tunnel crowd was. The theatre, which seats 5,600, was PACKED. Although the majority of the audience was teeny-boppers with parental-like chaperones, there were a surprising number of folks 30 and up, including the mother of two in front of us who got WAY too excited whenever Travis came on. You know it’s time to rethink your life when you’re pushing 40 and pumping your fist over a probably-gay 18-year old from a FOX television show.
Then again, I was there too, wasn’t I?
*Sigh.*
