My New Issue with Traffic Cops
In preparation for my long day at the office, I decided to step out and walk the extra avenue to get coffee at Starbucks…. because they have bigger cups than my local Brazilian coffee place. Also because it’s just too damn nice to be stuck inside.
Anyway, just after my barista told me to have a “FABULOUS” day, I walked out feeling great (you see, it’s the little things people) until I heard this crash. I turned my head and this cab had knocked down a guy on a bicycle and was still rolling forward… almost OVER the guy. So, without thinking I went running into the street and slammed on the hood of the cab to get his attention. The driver FINALLY stopped - unlike traffic that just kept on moving around them - and I helped the guy up.
Luckily he came out of that without being too hurt, but I’m sure most of that is shock so I told him to file a police report (especially since a traffic cop was standing there) and head over to the hospital to get checked out. Just in case.
Outside of being shaken up by seeing that, I am pissed off at this traffic cop. He saw the accident, but didn’t walk over to the guy to see how he was, didn’t help direct traffic away from the accident, and never said ANYTHING to the cab driver. Even when the bicycle rider asked to fill out a report, he said he couldn’t help him. Are you KIDDING me?!? What purpose does he serve?
I didn’t stay too long after (for fear of getting arrested for mouthing off at the traffic cop), but I did get a thank you from the poor guy on the bike for stopping and helping him.
So, I’m going to put this question out to all of you.
What IS the purpose of traffic cops? And even if it isn’t their job to deal with accidents, just out of the nature of being a police officer and being human, wouldn’t you DO something instead of standing there acting like nothing happened?
COME ON, a guy got hit by a cab!
No more Starbucks for me.

Right on, Melissa! It seems to me as our city gets bigger and bigger, the municipal service people seem to get more and more bureaucratic and complacent. There is an overall attitude that reflects an “it’s not my job” approach everywhere you look! I wish someone would come out and do the right thing. As far as I understand, their job is to help people, first and foremost. Good thing for the dude that you were there to help.
Melissa, did you ever know that you’re my hero? You’re everything I wish I could be. I can fly higher than an eagle—oh, wait, I can’t fly.
Now I know who to call if I ever find myself underneath a rolling taxi.
Don’t even get me started on cops.
I was involved in an accident today and the cops were perfect assholes.
I will post about it in a day or so once i cool down.
It’s pretty amazing the “not my problem” attitude so many people have…and to be a traffic cop and just ignore what happened? Inconceivable!
I think that’s when a verbal dressing down of a police officer should be allowed. :-)
