Caliente Cab Co.

I was walking around the village the other day around dinnertime, and saw a few CALIENTE CAB CO.’s… they looked neat. Fun, festive, lively. I made it a mental note to stop back by this place one night for dinner. But the other night, I went there with a couple of people that live in my apartment complex. I’m not sure if it is ALL Caliente’s, but the one I went to relatively close to NYU was ridiculous.

First of all the place was more packed than most concert venues I’ve been to. They ID at the door, but not very well. There were two levels in this place, seperated by only about 6 stairs. Basically the bouncer at the door checks your ID and says STAY DOWNSTAIRS if you’re under 21 (the bar is on the upper level). He checked my ID and told me to stay on the lower level… I asked him “WHY?” and he said “because you have to be 21 to drink.” I put my ID back in his face and told him to “check again.” He looked at it again, and though I’m still not convinced he checked it correctly, he told me “OK, bars on the top floor.” Whatever. This place was college freshman central. I am only 21 and I felt old. I probably only saw about 10 other people the entire night that looked old enough to be drinking.

Anyways, we got there around 11:15, and didn’t get our first round of drinks until well after midnight. They had two bartenders working, and they seemed to only serve the loud frat boys. BUT- I got one of the best margaritas I’ve had in a long time. I highly recommend them. Maybe around a normal hour such as dinnertime, the food and drinks may be a little more tolerable?

yeah the one right by washington sq park is def for the nyu crowd… the one on 6th or 7th is better, outdoor seating.. the food is decent but overpriced, really good flavored margaritas.

Kim, I have been to the one off of 7th Ave a few times. They have really good quesadillas, but if you want killer burritos with out-of-this-world molĂ© sauce, I’d head to Benny’s on the LES.
