Sa vie en rose.

Wow, this story is so Ma vie en rose. (I love the Village Voice!)

If you’ve never seen the film, it’s a Belgian one from about ten years ago about a young boy who identifies as a girl, and the ways in which his family/school/community deal (or choose not to deal) with all of the issues that his/her gender identity conjures.

Whether or not you like or are moved by the film, one thing it does successfully is cause the viewer, while watching it and afterwards, to ask, “What if? What if I were confronted with such a situation? How would I react? How would I deal?”

Well, it looks as though something very similar is now playing out here in the US. And while I’m not sure how I feel about it becoming a news story, the picture the Voice paints, at least so far, is one of support and understanding within the family and their community. A rough road is most certainly ahead, but I would hope that such compassion and understanding continues.
