Taking Charge of Apartment Safety - Who Else Can I Bitch To?!?!?!?
OK - We all know about the problems I’ve had in my apartment. Mosquitoes, floods, leaves in my living room from my fireplace, blah blah blah… but this is a serious problem. Our front door lock is broken.
I’ve called the building twice and so far nothing has happened. Is it really that difficult to buy a new lock? I understand that it would be difficult to get keys to everyone, but what other choice is there?
What surprises me is that no one else has complained. Well, that’s what the management company tells me - so there’s a good chance that it’s not true.
Either way, this is something that should be handled immediately - safety first. Or is this one of those things where they wait for something tragic to happen before they do something about it. Sure, I live on the UES and everyone just thinks that its such a safe neighborhood - and maybe it is, but let’s be honest, 86th is a bit on the sketchy side and my neighborhood is full of drunken idiots after hours. Case in point, the guy that was trying to beat on his girlfriend on the street 2 weeks ago.
So, if something doesn’t happen today - who else can I call? Who is the greater power that can get this done?
Any suggestions - because I’m not leaving this one alone.

call 311!!!
sorry to hear about this, melissa. my last landlords were kind of slumlords, so i can relate. after a particularly harrowing disaster, 311 was amazing in getting the proper reports filed and helping us (the tenants) get action taken quickly.
Hi Chris!!!!
Thanks for the info (I always forget about 311), I’ll give them a call tonight. We’ll see if the building tries to fix this today.
You should send a letter via certified mail to the management company. They must respond to that within 14 days (or reasonable amount of time). If they don’t you can start with-holding portion of the rent. But, certainly you may not want to do something as drastic as that. But I have a feeling that they will respond to a letter more than a call.. Because there is a record of it. Hope this advice helped.
I haven’t heard of the 311 route.. But hopefully that works a lot better.
Thanks Ian, I’ll give that a try too!
oh yah, the lock on my front door has been broken since i moved in. apparently the landlord is waiting for the weather to get nicer to fix it. total bs.
