Over the weekend, I had my gas turned on in my apartment. Been there about 4 months now and I hadn’t even noticed that my stove wasn’t working until I wanted to boil water for some tea one night. Of course, when I spoke to anyone at ConEd, they all asked some form of the same question…. “You haven’t turned on your stove ONCE in 4 months?” Well, no. This is New York.
Anyway… I got home last night to the smell of gas and after hearing the news about the explosion in that apartment building in Bergenfield New Jersey, I thought I’d give ConEd a call.
When I got them on the line, they pleasantly asked me a series of questions and told me that someone would be at my apartment in 45 minutes… 30 minutes later, they were at the door. Nice!
Turns out I didn’t have a leak. The pilot light was on too high and it was burning whatever Easy-Off residue was on the stove after I cleaned it. The ConEd guy ran a bunch of tests, showed me what the problem was and we had a nice long chat about cleaning… seems he’s a bit crazy when it comes to cleaning too.
So, thankfully, no gas leak - and ‘”Thank You” to ConEd for taking this seriously, sending out someone quickly and sending someone that didn’t roll their eyes at me when they realized it wasn’t a gas leak.
One thing my ConEd man said to me - call them as SOON as you think there’s a problem, you can never be too careful.
