Stupid Things I Did As A Freshman: Part I

Now that I’m almost graduated I wish to recount some of the dumb things I participated in as a freshman. And mind you, I certainly wasn’t among the worst. I’d have to say my freshman year was rather tame in comparison to what my bulimic roommate experienced.

So, No. 1 on the list will definitely be the trip to the infamous Silk Road Palace Chinese restaurant on Amsterdam between 81st and 82nd also known as “Free Wine in China” and “White Wine Chinese.” I hope I don’t have to say much more than “At this restaurant, you will be served unlimited cheap white boxed wine along with your meal.”

The trip included a ridiculously long subway ride from Union Square to the UWS as well as a ridiculously long wait to get a table while making fun of the *lame* Columbia students who were also there for the free white wine. After somehow getting in with my crappy fake ID that wasn’t even me (it was someone else’s fake) my friends and I proceeded to order mediocre Chinese food and get wasted. (I always forget that the Sweet and sour Chicken or whatever isn’t the same as the sesame chicken, which is what I actually want so I’m always stuck with this weird-ass sweet breaded and fried chicken dish.)

The three or four things I remember from that night (aside from the pounding headache the next day) was that (1) I asked some guy on the street if he was circumcised, (2) after he replied yes I said, “oh, so you’re Jewish?”, (3) I sat down on the sidewalk because I “needed to rest” (this part my friends had to remind me of the next day.) I also had a great time. Thanks Shomik, Paul, Johnny Chaps, and Liz.

Epilogue: I don’t go to the UWS very often and when some friends suggested White Wine Chinese for a get together all the memories (well, the two or three memories) came flooding back.

Oh boxed wine. My freshman year we played a softball game with drinks. If you spilled your drink while hitting, running the bases, or fielding you lost a run, but if you finished it your team got another run. Boxed wine came in handy in those situations.

My best freshman story (or worst) was when my friends decided to go out in the middle of the street and light six M80s inside of a frozen chicken to see what happened. Let’s just say we were all this far away from winning a Darwin Award!

THIS IS SO FUNNY because my friends & I went here too in our first year in New York and thought it was the best place ever! Is it still open?

The wine was indeed horrible, and I too had a hangover. Good times, good times….
