A Moment At Ellen’s - And Now We Give You The Singing Customers

Picture007.jpgFew days back, our guest came all the way from Alaska and we decided to give her a tour of City’s coolest restaurants. Obviously Ellen’s Stardust Diner was #1 in our list. This little gem on 50th and Broadway could make your dining experience a blast, especially if you didn’t tell your guest all about it ;). Those of you who haven’t been there, this is perhaps the only restaurant in the City where all the members of the waiting staff not only just takes your orders but, well, sings too! No, not humming. They all really SING turn by turn! And they sing really well. Loud on microphone, with little dance and twists and jumping up on a little platform. You would be keep thinking, what these guys and gals with such a beautiful voice and talent doing here or is that lip syncing? As it turns out, you are not alone thinking that. Lots of Broadway productions picked up their talents from this restaurant and the tradition continues till the date. Anyway, this story is about going the reverse way!

We had been to Ellen’s couple of times and enjoyed their singing staff and thanked them giving us good time. On our third visit, however, was different. On that day, restaurant’s almost entire floor was occupied by some group of teens for someone’s birthday party. So we got a nice VIP seat on the upper floor with a cool view (from which I took this photo from my camera phone). Now all these kids happened to be member of a large choir group and they started making themselves visible by mysterious humming sound. Soon they offered to sing in appreciation of singing waiters. And next thing we knew was this amazing moment: All the waiters who normally stand up, go in the center and sing to amuse the customers all day are now sitting in the center and the customers are standing up surrounding them and singing for them! It was a unique moment that wouldn’t have been possible without such a large group of customers who can sing together and their desire to show the appreciation. We were glad to witness it and those hardworking jolly good guys definitely deserved it.
