I don’t have a porch light
The end of this month brings my first Halloween in the city. I love Halloween and we always made a big deal about it at home. But home was in the suburbs. I know how Suburban Halloween works, but not City Halloween. I’d like to give out candy, but how do kids know where to go? In the ‘burbs, you just leave the porch light on to let trick-or-treaters know you’re home and giving out candy. what happens here? Do I hang a sign? Stand on the street corner with a bowl of candy? What’s the protocol? Someone please post a comment and let me know the proper procedure.

Iv never put a sign or anything out but the kids that live in my building just walk from floor to floor and ring every door bell in hopes of finding the ones offering candy. Also got to remember your dealing with kids and candy, if theres candy to be had kids will find it.
Well, I haven’t done a Halloween in NY, but I have done plenty in SF. What we did was make sure our door had plenty of halloween stuff on it–i.e. cardboard ghosts and orange and black streamers. When you’re showing your halloween spirit on the outside, people usually get that you might have some treats for them on the inside.
In my neighborhood in Queens, we decorate the doors and windows and the kids know that there is probably candy for them there. But in the past few years there seems to be less and less “trick or treating” going on. People are having more Halloween parties at home.
