The Dreamland Artist Club @ Coney Island

As if you needed another reason to hit up Coney Island. From June 12-September 6, 2004 when you peruse the vendors and rides at the seedy amusement park you’ll find a few familiar artistic styles amongst the “water gun”, “ice cream”, and “track derby” signage. Twenty-five illustrators, including Steve Powers, SSUR, and Ryan McGinness collaborated with New York public arts presenter Creative Time and local businesses to spruce up the advertorials within Coney Island’s amusement area.

If you want to see every piece in the exhibit I would print out the press release from the site. It sites what streets each are on. Though I must say, it was nice wandering through the corridors of the park trying to figure out if certain signs were part of the project or just innately cool.

Good Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

New York City is facing a major blood shortage this summer, and giving blood is pretty easy — you fill out a questionnaire, you have a hemoglobin test, they take your blood, and then, snacks! And if you go in to one of the actual Blood Centers, you get a recliner, and they’ve got a movie on — it takes maybe an hour and it’s really not painful at all.
Plus, if you go out for drinks the same night, you’re the cheapest date ever. Heh.
If they’re having a drive at your work, sign up this time, or follow the link, or give the Blood Centers a call and make an appointment. All y’all who work in midtown have one pretty near you in the Citicorp building. See you there.

Joao Gilberto

The Joao Gilberto concert was the single most beautiful show I have ever seen. “Beautiful” may seem like an odd adjective for a concert, but trust me, it’s apt.
The first third was problematic as the sound was difficult to get right. I was wondering how this would play out. Being a guitarist myself, I know first hand how difficult it is to take an nylon string acoustic guitar and get it miked up to the point where people can hear it. It’s quite hard. And Joao’s style is so soft it presented an even greater challenge. At one point he apologized and left the stage. Sound engineers scrambled and finally got things right. He came back out, settled in and just soared.
It’s not really just bossa nova… it’s a marvelous combo of jazz, pop, samba, bossa nova that really needs to be heard to be understood. I went to Amazon and picked up the last of what he has released and I didn’t own. There is also a new live CD called “In Tokyo.”
After the show my girl and I hit a romantic little tapas resturant in Sutton Place and had a pitcher of sangria and some spanish dishes.
What a great night. Dig the bossa nova, baby.

Puppies are the bessssst!!!

I have a serious soft side for boston terriers!

Vinyl Klash photos Part I

Here are some shots from the Vinyl Klash show at Riviera Gallery. Some really rad stuff.

It’s true — I do love a fog machine.

Just received this flyer from my lovely and talented sib:
“Our House:
House Party, Club System
No bullshit.
OPEN BAR ALL NIGHT AND WE’RE NOT KIDDING.
We’ve never run out. Hard liquor, mixers and beer. All night. $15/ person at the door.
COME TO DANCE AND NOT DEAL WITH FASHIONISTA FUCKERS.
Wear short-shorts and a beenie if you want. Or maybe only socks. We don’t give a fuck. We just want you there. Just be prepared to sweat a lot and dance your ass off.
HEAR MUSIC IN WAYS YOU NEVER THOUGHT POSSIBLE.
Our sound system will make you dance so hard your ass will be bouncing off the floor.
Look, just come and dance and have fun and get drunk—we’re going from ten till question mark. Bring your sneaks and sweats but not your fucking attitude. Save that for the office.

10pm – ?
$15 – drink all night, fuckers
138 south 4th
on the right behind the parking lot.
Outdoor “conversation area”
Custom SBS sound system
Intelligent Lighting system
Amazing people – Hilarious antics
Plus: A fog machine! Everybody loves a fucking fog machine!
ARTISTS:
Licious & Palmero (Lester Fresh Records)
Great Pets (Aphasia + SSG, INYC)
Matt Busch (Imago, INYC)”
I can vouch for the hilarious antics and the asses bouncing on/off the floor. My most piquant memory of this venue involves a pour Red-Bulled soul attempting some Farmer Ted from “Sixteen Candles” splits action on the dance floor (note use of the word “attempting”).
Anyway. My bro Licious is spinning, and it’s in Williamsburg but it’s Not That Kind Of An Evening, so if you’re restless and you like good beats, go check it out.

Battery Park Fun Times

I’m rehearsing a play in Battery Park tomorrow, so if you see a small group of people taking turns disclaiming, that’s us (…probably). Please don’t throw anything.
Wait! You can throw money. Please don’t throw anything sharp, though, or sticky. Thanks.
